What the Image Compressor does

  • Re-encodes images to WebP, JPEG or PNG using your browser's own image pipeline.
  • Gives you a quality slider and shows the resulting file size immediately, so you can find the point where the image still looks right.
  • Optionally scales the image down to a maximum edge length — usually the single biggest saving.
  • Shows the original and the result side by side with the exact number of bytes saved.

What it doesn't do

  • It doesn't upload your image. Everything runs on your device, which is why there's a size limit and why very large photos take a moment.
  • It doesn't process multiple files at once yet — one image at a time.
  • It doesn't preserve EXIF metadata such as camera model or GPS location. For sharing photos publicly that's usually an advantage.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read into the page and re-encoded using a canvas element in your own browser. Nothing is transmitted, which you can confirm by opening your browser's network tab, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page loads — the tool keeps working.

Which format should I pick?

WebP for almost everything — it's supported by every current browser and produces noticeably smaller files than JPEG at the same visual quality. Use JPEG if you need compatibility with older software, and PNG only when you need lossless quality or transparency.

Why did my PNG get bigger?

PNG is lossless, so re-encoding an already-optimised PNG can add bytes rather than remove them. If you're trying to reduce size, switch the output format to WebP, which supports transparency too.

Does compressing reduce image quality?

WebP and JPEG are lossy, so yes — but at 80% quality the difference is usually invisible while the file is a fraction of the size. Compare the two previews before downloading; if you can see the difference, raise the slider.
